Indian Army Chief Manoj Mukund Naravane will be honored by the Government of Nepal with the honorary rank of ‘General of the Nepal Army’ during his planned visit to Nepal. This traditional honor is given in recognition of the strong military ties between the two countries, Nepal and India. The Government of India also gives such an honor to the Chief of Army Staff of Nepal. But at present, the border dispute between Nepal and India has created an atmosphere of tension. In that context, special importance is being given to the President of Nepal, Vidyadevi Bhandari, to honor General Narvane with this honor.
General Narwane is scheduled to visit Nepal in the first week of November. Such honors began in 1950. During his visit to Nepal, General Narwane will hold important discussions with Army Chief General Purnachandra Thapa and Defense Minister Ishwar Pokharel. The tour was originally scheduled for February 3, 2020, but was postponed due to a lockdown caused by Kovid.
Meanwhile, the Nepalese government has started a controversy by accusing the Indian government of crossing the Kailas Mansarovar route through Nepal, but India has categorically denied the allegation. This is the first visit of the Army Chief to Nepal after this dispute.
